Florida boating safety practice

This free 3-question Florida pilot teaches a few safety concepts and shows explanations after each attempt. It is independent practice, not the official state exam, an approved course, or a route to a boater card. Check the state agency for the current rules and accepted providers before operating a boat.

For an official certificate, see the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Who needs education in Florida?

FWC says an operator born on or after January 1, 1988 generally needs an approved boating safety course and an FWC Boating Safety Education Identification Card to operate a motorboat of 10 horsepower or more. Florida calls it an education ID card, not a boating license.

FWC lists exemptions, including some supervised operators and qualified out-of-state visitors. A qualifying course-completion certificate with photo ID can be used for up to 90 days while awaiting a permanent card; temporary rental certificates follow their own rules. Check the FWC list for your exact situation.

What does an official course cost, and what does this practice cover?

Course-provider and temporary-certificate costs may differ. This free pilot charges nothing and does not issue a card; verify current provider prices on FWC's approved-course links before paying.

Choose an FWC-approved education course, complete it, and follow FWC's process for its ID card. An independent three-question practice score is not accepted proof.

What will these 3 questions help you study?

  • The birth-year and power threshold: Apply the January 1, 1988 and 10-horsepower rules to a concrete operator, then check the exemptions rather than treating the practice quiz as approval.
  • Wearable life jackets: Identify suitably sized, readily accessible wearable jackets for everyone aboard; check the actual vessel and trip before departure.
  • Swimmer and propeller safety: When someone is near the propeller, shut off the engine and keep the person in view. Neutral alone does not remove the hazard.

This is a small sample, not a full exam blueprint. Review each explanation and its source after submitting. The Florida state overview and the official agency page cover more than these three topics.

Put safety equipment within reach

Check the right wearable life jacket for each person and make it easy to reach. A life jacket only helps when it is available, fits, and is worn when needed.
