Studying for the Colorado boater exam

Boating safety study often covers topics such as: navigation rules of the road, required safety equipment, registration basics, weather and emergencies, alcohol and drug use, and trailering or launching. Our independent pilot sets cover selected safety topics for three states only; this state overview is not itself a course or an official exam.

We do not issue an official Colorado boater education card. Once you've prepared with our material, complete a course from a provider listed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife to obtain your card.

What's on the exam

  • Navigation rules and right of way
  • Required equipment (PFDs, flares, sound-producing devices)
  • Aids to navigation and chart basics
  • Anchoring, mooring, and docking
  • Weather, currents, and emergencies (capsizing, fire, person-in-water)
  • Boating under the influence and consequences
  • Trailering, launching, and retrieval
  • Local rules and waterways specific to Colorado

How to study
