Studying for the PCOC test in British Columbia
Our PCOC practice course aligns with Transport Canada's published Boating Safety Course and Test syllabus. We cover knowledge categories that the official test draws from: navigation rules and buoy systems, required equipment by vessel size, distress signals, weather and emergencies, alcohol and drug use on the water, and environmental stewardship.
Once you've worked through the material, complete the official PCOC test through a Transport Canada-accredited provider to receive your card.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a PCOC to operate a boat in British Columbia?
- Yes. Under Transport Canada's Competency of Operators of Pleasure Craft Regulations, every operator of a powered pleasure craft in British Columbia (and across Canada) needs proof of competency, most commonly the lifetime PCOC.
- Where do I get an official PCOC card?
- From a Transport Canada-accredited course provider. boatexam.io is an independent study and practice resource — we are not currently a Transport Canada-accredited provider, so we do not issue official cards.
- Is the PCOC test the same in every province?
- Yes — the federal Boating Safety Course and Test syllabus is national. Provinces add regional context (waterways, weather, conservation officer enforcement) but the test content is consistent.
- How long is the PCOC valid?
- Lifetime. Once you have it, you don't need to renew it. Replacements are issued through the same accredited provider.
